Reverend Frederick Sheely Weiser attended Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Gettysburg College, and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pa. He was a former pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Biglerville, Pennsylvania and also served congregations in Hanover and York, Pa. In 1957, he published "A Village in a Glen," a history of Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

A noted geneologist and historian, Weiser published geneologies of both the Weiser and the Sheely families. A specialist on Pennsylvania German folklore, he authored several books on Fraktur ---the decorative baptismal certificates and artwork of the Pennsylvania Germans. During his lifetime he lectured at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Museum in Williamsburg and the American Museum of Folk Art in New York City. In his spare time, he often took groups of relatives and others to visit select cities in Germany and Switzerland. In particular, he often visited the town of Grossaspach near Stuttgart, the ancestral home of Conrad Weiser.

Pastor Wesier was the son of Donald Koehler Weiser of Gettysburg and Elizabeth Sheely Weiser of Hanover. He was the sister of Harriette Weiser Russell and uncle to Mark Weiser Russell and Craig Howard Russell. Reverend Weiser was fluent in German and also spoke and understood Pennsylvania Dutch. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and was a direct descendant of Pennsylvania German pioneer Conrad Weiser of Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania.

In 2010, Ms. Lisa Minardi of the Wintherthur Museum in Delaware, announced the acquisition of many of Frederick Weiser's frakturs. The rest of Reverend Weiser's collection of Pennsylvania German furniture and furnishings was auctioned by Pook and Pook of Downingtown, Pennsylvania in January of 2013.

Among the publications of Reverend Weiser, the following are notable:

Piety and Protocol in Folk Art: Pennsylvania German Fraktur Birth and Baptismal Certificates, Winterthur Portfolio, Volume 8, 1973 (19-44).

Frederick Weiser's papers are held at Gettysburg College's Musselman Library.

Many of the notes and files related to his Fraktur collection are held by Winterthur.

I would like to give special thanks to Amy Hunt for photographing the Weiser Family graves in Evergreen Cemetety, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
