Dr. Walter E. Lee, Jr.
(June 19, 1920 - January 25, 2009)

Dr. Walter E. Lee, Jr., 88, a prominent Waycross physician engaged in the practice of medicine locally from 1948 until his retirement in October 1989, passed away January 25, 2009.

A fourth generation Waycrossan, born June 19, 1920, Dr. Lee was the son of the late Walter Edward Lee, Sr. and the late Charity Polkinghorne Lee, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Monroe Lee, and a daughter, Barbara Lee Smith. After graduating from Waycross High School and the Suwanee Military Academy, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and the Phi Chi medical fraternity.

He served his internship in the United States Navy and served as Medical Officer aboard the USS Waccamaw during World War II in the Caribbean, North and South Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean.

Following his naval service, Dr. Lee returned to Waycross in 1948 and entered into the general practice of medicine with his uncle, the late Dr. A.W. DeLoach. He served on the staff of both the old Ware County Hospital and Memorial Hospital, presently known as Satilla Regional Medical Center, where he held various offices on the staff. He was a past president of the Ware County Medical Society. He was a charter member and fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, an emeritus member of the Southern Medical Association, a life member of the American Medical Association of Georgia, a life member of the Medical Association of Georgia and an emeritus member of the Medical College of Georgia Alumni Association.

He was a communicant and former vestryman of Grace Episcopal Church, a founder and former trustee of Southwood School, a past-president and board member of the Dover Bluff Club, Inc., an honorary member of the Waycross Fishing Club, a life member of the National Rifle Association, a life member of the Elks, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and a member of the Okefenokee Country Club. He was listed in the 1970 Edition of Personalities of the South.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Walter E. Lee, III, and Joni A. Lee, two grandsons, Walter E. Lee, IV and Duncan M. Lee, and two granddaughters, Hannah E. Lee and Dixie E. Lee.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Oakland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Miles-Odum Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm on Tuesday, January 27.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Grace Episcopal Church 410 Pendleton St., Waycross, GA 31501.
