1 dies as driverless truck hits pickup
GLOBE - A Pinto Valley Mine employee was killed when a large runaway water truck ran over the pickup truck he was driving, Gila County Sheriff Joe Rodriquez said Monday.
Rodriquez said the accident occurred Friday morning at the mine's open-pit operation about five miles west of Miami off U.S. 60. Pete Bodiroga, 61 of the community of Central Heights between Globe and Miami, was dead on arrival at Miami-Inspiration Hospital, he said.
The larger truck was being filled with water when the brake somehow disengaged, the sheriff said. The Truck began rolling down the hill at the same time Bodiroga was driving up the hill in the pickup, he said.
A passenger in the pickup, Kenneth Van Drome, 57, of Claypool, yelled that a truck without a driver was coming at them and then jumped to safety, Rodriquez said.
"Mr. Bodiroga didn't have time to bail out", he said.
Rodriquez said that the death is considered an accident but that the state mine inspector and the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.
