Howard was raised in Coudersport, PA in a family of four sons, a mother who was a graduate of Julliard School of Music and a gifted pianist and a father who owned a grocery store. He and all his brothers excelled in all sports and he lettered in football, basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics at Mansfield State Teacher's College. He taught and coached in the N.Y. school system initially. Howard and Nina Fenner moved to Orlando, Fla in 1946 with their young son, Terry. Howard resumed his teaching profession in the science and mathematics field. He enjoyed teaching Physics and Calculus. In 1947 Susan was born and three months later Terry, aged 9, was riding his bike and was struck by a drunk driver and suffered severe head trauma. He was in a coma for three months, but somehow lived to endure a tragic life with brain trauma. Howard and Nina were heartbroken, but they were an example of pure strength and love during the many trials that lay ahead as a result of the tragedy. Howard had a keen sense of humor, never met a stranger and was respected by all who knew him. Howard became the President of The Orange County Classroom Teacher's Association and was revered for his common sense and leadership abilities. In 1966 Howard died at the age of 56. As a tribute to him the school where he taught was suspended for his funeral. There were approximately 300 people in attendance at his funeral comprised of family, friends, cohorts and adoring students. An example of the caliber of teacher Howard was is best exemplified in the story of the young student who had been socially passed; but could not read. Howard stayed after school and tutored the student until he was able to read. The student was eternally grateful for his kindness. The entire school system in the Orlando area was shocked and saddened by Howard's death, so much so that they started a scholarship fund in Howard's name. The Orange County Classroom Teacher's Association instated The Howard E. Fenner Scholarship and presented the first scholarship to Susan Fenner for a four year college scholarship. Every year since 1966 four or five college assistance scholarships have been awarded to qualified teacher's children for college expenses. Over 200 students have received the Howard E. Fenner Scholarships to date, in 2010. The scholarship is such a fitting tribute for the dedication and sagacity of a great educator.
