Funeral services for Archie T. Glossup of Sulphur Springs were held Jan. 17 at the Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Wally Williams and Rev. Howard Marsh officiating. Burial followed at the Ridgeway Cemetery with Jonathan Sampson, Joshua Sampson, Spencer Hinkle, David Robinson, Benny Vice, Wayne Bledsoe, James Parker and Gary Doss serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Glossup, Doyle Glossup, Brian Peacock, Joe Don Peacock, Harral Peacock and Dr. Mark Miller. Military graveside services were conducted by the Hopkins County Military Coalition. Services were arranged by Tapp Funeral Home. Glossup died Jan 15 at the Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
Glossup was born in the Emblem Community of Hopkins County on March 22, 1912, the son of Grover Cleve and Rose Anderson Glossup. He married Maurine M. Young on Jan. 22, 1949, in Cumby, Texas. Glossup was a retired dairy farmer and taught school for two years. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II in 1942 at Camp Maxey, Galveston, Texas, served with the 503rd Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Division Battery K, Searchlight Battery in the Aleutians, reassigned in 1944 to TRTC in Fort Rucker, Ala., then was discharged on Nov. 10, 1945, in Fort Sill, Okla. He was a 50-year member of the Cumby Masonic Lodge AF&AM #180 and was a charter member of the Wesley United Methodist Church.
Glossup is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maurine Glossup; daughter, Mary Beth Sampson and her husband, Michael, of Commerce; brother, Earl "Bub" Glossup and his wife, Opal, of Amarillo; sister, Wilma Stiff of Sulphur Springs; grandson, Jonathan M. Sampson of Fort Worth and Joshua T. Sampson of Commerce; nephews Jerry Glossup and wife, Shirley, and Doyle Glossup and wife, Hazel, all of Sulphur Springs; nieces, Karen Reading of Silver City, N.M., and Laveta Maxey and husband, Doug, of Amarillo. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lester Glossup in January 2001.
Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Youth Fund.
