Gilmore was noted as being both a skilled carpenter, cabinet maker and a craftsman. These talents were put to good use in the rebuilding of the Church on the Hill in the mid to late 1800's in which he had a leading role. He was also the taxidermist of '10,000 Birds" some of which are displayed in the Acworth Public library along with his portrait.

As a child, Gilmore fell down a long flight of steps and permanently injured his spine. This back injury affected both his height and his posture throughout his life. He died unmarried.
