Harold Parker Ross, 91, of 1774 Farmington Avenue, Unionville section of Farmington, husband of Mildred (Judd) Ross, passed to his eternal reward on Sunday (January 18, 2009) at UCONN Health Center in Farmington due to complications of Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

He was born May 9, 1917 in Boston, MA, the only child of Archibald Hector Robertson and Ida May (Middlemas) Ross and grew up in the greater Boston area.

Prior to being drafted for service in World War II, he had a varied employment career in metropolitan Boston including operating an advertising distribution business; night manager for the Waldorf cafeteria system at the former Scollay Square, where he injured his back after falling down a flight of stairs while hauling ice; hospital orderly, and shipyard machinist.

Harold served in the U.S. Army at Old Farms Convalescent Hospital in Avon during World War II, training blinded veterans with physical coping methods, ironically having to employ these techniques himself as he lost his sight to elderly macular degeneration.

Following the war, he worked briefly for Underwood Typewriter and Capitol Tire in Hartford before joining automobile sales at Jensen's Inc. in West Hartford; he operated his own Shell gas station in West Hartford for several years, following which he returned to Jensen's as service manager.

For the last 15 years of his career, he was a federal civil service facilities administrator for Army Reserve Centers in West Hartford and Cromwell.

Harold was associated with the Hartford Barracks of the CT State Police as an auxiliary trooper, and served with the U.S. Army Reserves in hospital and military intelligence units, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4.

He contributed substantial past civic service in Farmington, including justice of the peace; president respectively of the Recreation Association, the Taxpayers Association, and the Tunxis Senior Citizens; and was a member of the Civil Defense team that served during and following the devastating 1955 flood.

He was an active Freemason as a member of Evening Star Lodge #101, AF&AM for over 35 years, and a vitally serving member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational for nearly 60 years, both in the village of Unionville.

In retirement, he also delivered prescriptions for several years for Ryan Pharmacy, served as vice-president and a director of the former Unionville Water Company, and was a director of the West Avon Cemetery Association before health complications led to his residence at Brightview of Avon in 2006.

In addition to his devoted wife of 60 years, Harold is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Cynthia (Clement) Ross of the Forestville section of Bristol; three grandchildren and their spouses: Matthew and Chalise (Nettleton) Ross of Unionville, Elissa and Sean Conroy of Manchester, and Krista and Benjamin Wagoner of Bristol; two great-grandsons, Nathaniel Ross and Braden Conroy; several cousins, niece and nephews; and sister-in-law, Arline Olson of Farmington. He was predeceased by his daughter, Eleanor, his son from his previous marriage, Allan, and his pet cat, Goldie.

Harold's Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 1 p.m. at First Church of Christ, Congregational, Tunxis Square, Route 4, Unionville, with the Rev. Thomas Dean officiating.
Private Interment with a Masonic Committal Service will be held at the convenience of the family in their plot at West Avon Cemetery, Avon.
