John was born in Canada, one of eight children of Irish immigrants John and Ellen McBride-Lamb. He immigrated to the United States with his parents. He married Alta Dawes in Goodland, Kansas and had five children.
John was a mine engineer working at different mines in Tonopah, National, Midas, and the Railroad District of Nevada until filing his own mining claims near Elko, Nevada. In later years, he became a watchman for Southern Pacific Railroad.
John eventually moved to Sacramento, California where he lived with his wife Alta. He died in 1940, and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, California.
