Eugene "Geno" R. Atwood, 88, of Janesville, was called home on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, two weeks after suffering a significant stroke. He was born in Milwaukee on October 2, 1920, and adopted as an infant by George and Katherine (Hughes) Atwood. Gene spent his early years in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, where his father operated a candy store until the Great Depression hit. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1938. He, then, lived in Madison Wisconsin and attended college, studying engineering for 1 ½ years. Gene served in the Army Corps from October 1940 to August 1945. He was stationed in Iceland before moving on to Britain, Omaha Beach (Easy Red), Northern France, the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and Central Europe. After WWII, Gene worked as a machinist for several employers until retiring from Gilman Engineering after more than 21 years of employment there. He was an avid fisherman and model railroader. Gene was a past president of the Eagles Club and the oldest active member. He was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and long-time companion, Bette J. Strain. He is survived by members of his extended family, including Roy R. Strain and Sandra (Robyn) Slaughter of Florida, Pamela (David) Shoemaker of Ohio, and Penny (Loren) Mathison and Tracy (Kathryn) Strain of Janesville. He is further survived by "grandchildren" whom Gene was very fond of: Jacqueline Strain, Annalea Strain, Shannon Milner, Christie Macko, Chadwick Lange, Kelly Kruse, Rick Breyman, William Breyman, Casey Strain, and Bryan Strain. In addition, he will be greatly missed by his special friends Harry (Elaine) Kubiak, Rudy (Betty) Semerud, and Bill Peters, all of Janesville and Joy Pederson of Beloit. Gene also leaves behind his beloved white Persian cat, Fluffy.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at the WHITCOMB - LYNCH - ALBRECHT FUNERAL HOME, Janesville, 15 N. Jackson St., with Rev. Jerry Amstutz officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with full Military Rites provided by VFW Kienow - Hilt Post #1621. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the FUNERAL HOME with an Eagles Club Service beginning at 7 p.m. and, also, on Tuesday from 12 Noon until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Eagles Club or to the Wounded Warrior Project. (Published in the Janesville Gazette Sunday January 18, 2009)
