HE WAS A PIONEER
J.R. Bailey Drove Stage Between Galena and Chicago

Jeremiah Russell Bailey, a Galena pioneer, died recently at Rosefield, S.D., and a local paper had the following obituary notice:

Jeremiah Russell Bailey died at his late home in Rosefield township, this county, at 12:04 o'clock a.m. on Sunday last at the ripe old age of 95 years, 8 months and 14 days. He was born at or near Syracuse, N.Y., February 14, 1801. In early manhood he settled at Collinsville, near St. Louis. Some years later he moved up the river and settled at Galena, Ill., in the pioneer days of country, and about the close of the Black Hawk Indian war. He drove stage from Galena to Chicago before the days of railroading in Northern Illinois, and assisted in surveying the territory of Wisconsin.

J. Russell Bailey and Mary Harris were married at St. Louis. A large family of children was born unto them-eight of them still living, namely: Mrs. Lizzie Oliver of Mankato, Minnesota; Mrs. Lafe Green of Hanover, Illinois; Mrs. S. Sanders of Belle Plaine, Iowa; Mrs. James McAllister of this city; William of Yankton; Frank of Idylwilde; Al of Rosefield; George of Great Falls, Montana; and Ed, who was last heard of in Georgia.

The deceased was a man of temperate habits, and up until about 18 months ago, when he had an attack of la grippe, of iron constitution. Following this attack, he was troubled with sinking spells and congested lungs. He was up and about, however, till about a fortnight ago, when he was taken to his bed.

The funeral was held on the 25th last at the late home of the deceased, Rev. Thomas Boughton preaching the sermon. The interment was in the Idylwilde cemetery. The funeral was a large one.

The widow (who is nearly four score) and the children and other relatives have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their affliction.
