'Grandma Bishop,' 94, Died Saturday
Mrs. Sarah Angeline Simmons Bishop, believed to be the oldest woman in Texas County, died May 27, at the age of 94.
Affectionately known as "Grandma Bishop," she was a life-long resident of this county and was widely known. She died at the home of a son, Frank Bishop, near Simmons. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Simmons, pioneer residents, and was born April 15, 1856. In 1878, she was married to Seth Burk Bishop and 10 children were born to them.
Her husband preceded her and six children in death. Mrs. Bishop had lived her entire life in Texas County.
As a young woman, she united with the Oak Dale Methodist Church and was a faithful attendant until recently when her health failed. Mrs. Bishop was known to be an extremely jolly and friendly person and had a wide circle of friends.
Survivors include three sons, Frank and Alfred of Simmons; Hugh Bishop of Newton, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. E. M. Flowers of Houston; 27 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Simmons Church by Rev. David Finley. Burial was in the family plot at Union cemetery under the direction of Elliott's.
