Known as "Jimbo",and a giant of a man, James Koons grew up in Happy Valley, Blount County, TN. He went into the business of operating heavy equipment and working on construction jobs. He married Grace Sellars of Happy Valley after her husband Joe Gardner died, leaving her with three sons, Ernest, Carlos, and Harry Gardner. Jimbo raised the boys as if they were his own. Jimbo's sister Lillie Koons married Floyd Sellers, a brother of Grace, so their children were double first cousins.
