Joseph William Burke, 70, of Farmersville died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, August 29, 1996, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Mr. Burke was born July 28, 1926 in Kincaid, the son of Michael and Ada Alice (Manuel) Burke. He married Lois A. Standering on June 13, 1964 in Taylorville. Mr. Burke was a 1944 graduate of South Fork Community High School in Kincaid. He worked as mine superintendent of Crown Coal Mine #3 in Farmersville for 7 years, retiring in 1988. Mr. Burke served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946, and during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1954. He was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kincaid, the VFW in Taylorville and the American Legion in Kincaid, of which he was a past commander.

Surviving are his wife, Lois; one daughter, Mrs. Ernest (JoAnn) Waite of Tovey; two grandchildren, Lee Waite and Becky Waite, both of Tovey; two brothers, Charles Burke of Taylorville and Robert (wife, Roberta) Burke of Joliet; one sister, Ms Betty Borgognoni of Kincaid; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret Freeman and Patricia Grace; four brothers, John Burke, Patrick Burke, Bernard Burke and James Burke; and two half-brothers, James Burke and Michael Burke Sr.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 1996, at Masterson Funeral Home in Kincaid. Rev. Jerry Divjak officiated, with burial following at Calvary Cemetery in Pawnee.

Pallbearers were Larry Brown, Glenn Brown, William Stottler, Raymond Sdurston, James Hampton and Charles Rhine.

Honorary pallbearers were Ward Walker, James Pickett and Fred Bowman.
