The Barnes family had moved to Millerton, Pennsylvania, where Michael grew up.
Michael enlisted in the Marines 8 August 1968, at a recruiting office in Syracuse, New York.
When Michael arrived in Vietnam 25 January 1969, he was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Taylor Common with Bravo Company operating 6 kilometers east northeast of the An Hoa Airfield. While on a patrol Michael detonated a hostile booby trap and was med-evac to a Station Hospital in Danang, where he died 4 February, as a result of fragmentation wounds to the head and body that he sustained from the explosion on 3 February.
Survived by his parents, Melvin Allen and Charlotte L Barnes, and his brother and sister, Richard and Sharon Lee Barnes, all of Rural Delivery #2, Box 50, Millerton, Pennsylvania.
