My Uncle David was born in Chicago to Gertrude and Harold Baird. he had three brothers--Howard, Clyde, and John. David grew up during the depression. In his memoirs he says, "While the depression years were very hard on my parents, life was a ball for my older brother, Howard and me."
As a teenager David worked as a caddy, a baggage handler at Union Station, a pin setter at the bowling alley, and a newspaper boy.
Right out of High school David joined the Navy and was assigned to LST 446. After WWII he completed his college degree in Chemistry. In 1948 he married Hanna Austin, they were married for 60 years and had 7 children.
David worked for G.D. Searle for 27 years.
David became very involved with the Illinois LST Assoc. were he served as editor of the newsletter for many years.
David took pride in his family and will always be remembered and loved.
