When Sarah was eleven years of age in 1850, she traveled with her family by covered wagon to a new farm home in Jefferson County, Iowa, near Fairfield. Here on the family farm, she grew to young womanhood.
It was on August 25, 1857, that tragedy struck. On that date, Sarah suffered fatal injuries as the result of a run-away horse accident at her parents residence. A record of this accident is recorded in the September 10, 1857, edition of the Fairfield Ledger.
