Mystic, spiritual teacher, and Author. Also known as Acharya Rajneesh and Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and later taking the name Osho. He went to Jabalpur University where he received a bachelors degree in 1955. He also obtained a masters degree in philosophy from the University of Saugar in 1957. He then received a teaching position at Raipur Sanskrit College. The following year he taught philosophy at the University of Jabalpur. His teachings of a syncretistic spiritual path combined Hinduism, Jainism, Zen Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, ancient Greek philosophy, and many other religious and philosophic traditions. His syncretic teachings emphasize the importance of meditation, awareness, love, celebration, creativity and humor. He taught a form of Monism, that God was in everything and everyone. There is no division between "God" and "not-God". People, even at their worse, are divine. He recognized Jesus Christ as having attained enlightenment, and believed that he survived his crucifixion and moved to India where he died at the age of 112. His Philosophical writings include " My Way: The Way of the White Cloud, "The Book of Secrets: Keys to Love and Meditation", "Meditation: The Art of Ecstasy", and many others. Rajneesh was born in Kuchwara, India. His parents' religion was Jainism, yet he never practiced any religion during his lifetime. While living in Bombay he would meet with individuals and small groups at his apartment, acting as a spiritual teacher and guide. In 1970 at Bombay he introduced what is now called "Drynamic Meditation," which was synthesized from Yoga, Sufism, Tibetan Buddhism, and contemporary psychological thought. He then moved to Pune, where he established an ashram (place of teaching) to provide a larger facility for his growing number of disciples. In 1981 due to health reasons he removed to the United States to receive advanced medical treatment. Rajneesh and his followers established a community on the 65,000 acre "Big Muddy Ranch" near Antelope, Oregon, later known as Rajneeshpuram (City of Rajneesh). Locals were intolerant of Rajneesh and his followers because of the religious and cultural differences. The city council and town officials made it difficult for the group, and continually denied permits for their businesses. Because of accusations and threats, His followers arranged for him to be flown to Charlotte, North Carolina for safety. He had also been under scrutiny by the United States Government, for allegedly arranging phony marriages between his Indian followers and American citizens so that they could stay in the country. He was also charged with lying on his immigration papers. He entered no-contest plea and he was given a suspended sentence with the condition that he leave the country. He returned to Pune India in 1987 and he then adopted the name "Osho".
