He was born in Detroit, Michigan but as a toddler his family moved to Texas. He grew up in Marfa, Texas, the last of three boys born to Johnny and Una Mathews.

In 1983, Mathews founded with eight other men, the white supremacist group called The Order Bruders Schweigen (or the Silent Brotherhood).

He was killed during a gun battle with law enforcement agents who surrounded his house south of Coupeville, Washington on Whidbey Island on December 8, 1984.
