Oman was a retired barber. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and Korea and was a member of the Oak Street Baptist Church.

Survivors at time of death included his wife Frances Barnett of Graham; three sons, Dennis Barnett, Terry Barnett and Kelly Barnett; one sister, Mildred Springer.

Oman Barnett gave his first professional haircut in 1955. He got out of barber school in 1954 and one month later, he went to work for two other barbers - Paul Wisdom and Jack Ellard. Those two men taught Oman Barnett everything he ever needed to know. His first paycheck was $28. Oman Barnett went to work next with Mr. Sipe and his father.
