"David Trine was 21 when he enlisted on 8/21/1861 in Paulding County, Ohio as a Corporal into "E" Co. of the 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He is fairly tall at 5'11".
On 19 Sep 1863 during the Battle of Chickamauga, he was severely wounded. A rebel musket ball passed through the left shoulder entering on the outer side of the arm, 2 inches below the apex of the shoulder, crushed the head of the humorous into fragments and travelled inwards and backwards just below the left scapula. The ball emerged from his body about an inch to the left of his 2nd dorsal vertebra having travelled about 6 inches through his body.
He spent the next seven months in army hospitals in Chattanooga, TN, Bridgeport, AL, Nashville, TN, Louisville, KY, Jeffersonville, IN, Madison, IN, the USA Hospital Steamer Charles McDougall, and Cincinnati, OH He was finally discharged for his wounds on May 5. He was 23 years old.
His shoulder has complete anchylosis (stiffness, rigidity) and the soundness and symmetry of the shoulder was destroyed. The arm is partly paralyzed, atrophied, and held firmly to his side. He can move his arm below the left elbow. He has severe pain in his left shoulder at all times.
David Trine married Catherine J. Law on 22 May 1867 in Hamilton Butler County, Ohio."
