John "Jack" F. Hampton
TEC5 US Army ~ World War II
October 13, 1917 - September 24, 2008

Longtime Antioch resident Jack Hampton passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, in Antioch at the age of 90.

To the end he was supported by his loving wife of 63 years, Lillian Hampton, and his devoted children Patricia Summers and John Hampton. He is also survived by his loving sister Rita Murray and her husband Everett of Cour d'Alene, Idaho; four grandchildren Chris Hoye of Oakley, Anne Rogers of Bremerton, WA, EmmaLee Bowman of Antioch, and Scott Leykam of Palo Alto; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews Linda Thomas, Pat Murray, Bill Bevan, and Carl Bevan.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Alice Hampton, and his loving sister Gertrude "Babe" Bevan and her husband Ed.

Jack was born in Dry Creek, California, on October 13, 1917. The family moved to Antioch when he was a young man, and he graduated from Antioch High School in 1936.

He proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" in England, Normandy, Holland and the Ardennes.

After the war he was married to Lillian and they raised their family in Antioch. He worked with Fiberboard Paper Products until his retirement in 1983.

Jack loved the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends. He was a man of many talents and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hiking, rock hounding, reading, fishing, and--most of all--golf. He was a member of the Lone Tree Men's Golf Club and played every Sunday morning with his buddies in the Dawn Duffers until he suffered a stroke in 2003. Jack loved to travel, and in retirement, he and Lillian explored the deserts, mountains, and beaches of the western United States. He also spent many days walking the foothills of Mt. Diablo searching for petrified wood and exploring nature.

Jack will be remembered as an honest man, a devoted husband, a loving father, a good citizen, and a dear friend. He asked that we say goodbye to all of his friends and acquaintances.

In honor of his military service, he was buried with honor at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery near Dixon, California, on Friday, October 10, 2008.
