Husband of Jane Ellison McCurdy.

Son of Francis M. and Mary Ann Ware Trammell (See links below).

Charles is found living with parents, Francis M. Trammell, 55, and Mary A. Trammel, 35, in the Valley Plains area of Harris County, Georgia in the 1850 census. Known as Charles H. Trammell, aged 10, he was, as his father was, born in Georgia. His mother in Maryland. Others with them at this time were his half-siblings, Elizabeth 27, Cicero 21, Adrian A 17, Sarah A. 15 and his full siblings, William V. 6, and Antoinette 4. His father was previously married to Sarah Elizabeth Copeland who passed away in 1836.

Ten years later, in 1860, he was still living with his parents and still in the Valley Plains area. Now at the age of 19, he was still at home with his parents. In the household now are he, his parents, his younger siblings, Susan 14, whom I take to be Antonette, and now a new one not mentioned before, Frances 7. also there were his older 28 year old, married half-brother Augustus and his family, which is made up of his wife Frances 23 and their two children, Sarah 3 and M.W. Trammell 2 years old. Augustus is now a minister of the gospel. There is another laborer with them, a gentleman named Gar Johnson 17, who is working on the farm.

The Civil War, like most in the country, did not pass him by and Charles was conscripted as a Private in the Georgia Conscripts Infantry Regiment and served the state of Georgia.

Apparently just after the Civil War, Charles married Miss Jane Ellison McCurdy and by 1870, had acquired a farm of their own near Hamilton, Georgia. Now at the age of 27 and Jane 25, they had started a family of their own, with children Stella 4, Eugene 3 and baby Charlie aged one. They had what was termed a housekeeper living with them also at the time. Miss Lucinthia MCCurdy aged 27. Most probably this was a sister of Jane.

Things evidently boomed for Charles and Jane thereafter, for in ten short years, by 1880 the family had increased from the three children mentioned above to seven and included Claude Trammell 9, Minnie Trammell 7, Corine Trammell 5 and Helen Trammell 3. By now they had moved back into the Valley Plains area and the farm home they lived in was large enough to include his mother, widowed Mary A. Trammell 60, a sister, Susan Trammell 25 and one of Jane's sisters, Harriet McCurdy 37. Charles was now 37, Jane 35, Stella 14, Eugene 12 and Charlie 11.

However, by the next census year of 1900, things had lessened somewhat in the household and now at the age of 59, he and Jane, also listed as 59 had only one of their children with them; thirty-three year old Susan who was an unmarried school teacher. They owned a farm, however there was no indication it was a working farm, for Charles gave no occupation. Everyone else was gone at this time. Sadly, it was reported that two of the seven children had by now passed away. This would have been Helen and Claude.

Charles and Jane's son Eugene became an attorney-at-law, and before 1910, the couple were living with him. Whether they moved in with him or him with them, I have not determined, however, Eugene was still a bachelor at 34 and was acting head of house for the couple now in their late sixties.

Charles died the next year, in 1911 and Jane in 1916. They lie together somewhere here in the Trammell Cemetery.
