Ferne E. (Salsbury) Chadbourne, 93, of Westbrook, and formerly of Kittery, Maine, went to Heaven Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland Maine.
Born March 19, 1908, in Canaan, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Leonal and Rowena (Stedman) Salsbury. She lived in Kittery most of her life, having moved there in 1942. She moved to Westbrook in 1997. Over the years, she worked at a variety of jobs. She was a telephone operator, and then a nurse's aid at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and then worked as a shoe inspector in the footwear manufacturing and repair field.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, embroidery and loved music. She enjoyed playing piano. She was active with her church, having been a long-time member of St. Mark's Methodist Church in Kittery. She was an animal lover, and a kind and considerate person, loved by all who knew her.
On Feb. 28, 1927, she married Roland Chadbourne in Skowhegen, Maine. Her husband predeceased her. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Chadbourne-Looser; three sisters, Theda Johnson, Elizabeth Holt and Marilyn Reddiker; and three brothers, Bernard Salsbury, Mylon Salsbury and Afton Salsbury. She is survived by a son, four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.
- My grandmother was such a sweet and kind person. Everyone that knew or met her loved her. I miss hearing her sweet voice over the phone, and seeing her when I go up to Maine. I have very fond memories of her, and I miss her so much. One day I know I will see her again.
One of her favorite hymns.
