Gladys Aldena Handley was the 4th child and 1st daughter born to Lyman and Lula Elizabeth Fears Handley.
She became a nurse about 1920 and served in the US Army. When she left home to become a nurse, her father told her she could not come back home as it was considered a shameful thing to be come a female nurse at that time. She worked at the Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, California, taking care of the war wounded.
she married Woolcie William Crowell about 1924 and to this marriage were born two children: Elizabeth Jene (1925- ) and Shirley Ann (1938- ).
