Jerry Ray Hall enlisted in the Marine Corps on 20 Jun 1966. After Basic and Advanced training, he received orders to Vietnam, arriving on 16 Jun 1967. Once in-country, he was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines.
On 18 Oct 1967 Alpha 1/9 was at Con Thien (Hill 158) a short distance south of the Demilitarized Zone. At about 4:45 in the afternoon, Con Thien received artillery and mortar fire. The Marines returned fire on the enemy mortar positions. In an accident of war, one round of 60mm mortar fire was a "short round", falling within the Con Thien perimeter. Four Marines were wounded by the explosion, three seriously enough to warrant medical evacuation. Corporal Jerry Hall was one of those three, and he died while being evacuated.
His body was returned to his parents, Reverend James C. and Essie B. Hall, for burial.
