He was mustered into the U.S. Army on 10 Aug 1862 at New Harmony, Posey Co., Indiana, and died of wounds received 8 Oct 1863 in Helena, Phillips Co., Arkansas while serving as a Private in Company A, 91st Indiana Infantry Regiment, but he was not officially mustered out of service (listed as deceased) until 22 Oct 1863 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He had married Sarah Jane Flannigan (1840-1912) less than four years earlier on 28 Oct 1858 in McLeansboro, Hamilton Co., Illinois. She filed for a military widow's pension for herself and their child, Demetis Johnson, on 27 Feb 1864.
