Mary "Maxine" Freeman Everly, 94, of Fairmont, quietly passed from this life Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, in her home with her family by her side. She was married to the late Arthur Everly. Maxine was born on Oct. 21, 1914, one of six children to the late Mack and Mollie Manley Crane on a 500-acre family farm in Kilarm, W.Va. She attended a two-room school and participated in acting throughout her junior and high schools years. She graduated from Monongah High School in 1932. Lonnie Crane, her son and only child, was born in 1934 and is her pride and joy. Over the years they have spent much time together, especially in the last few years as Lonnie provided care to ensure Maxine continued to lead an active and family-filled life. He married Linda Bryan and they had two daughters and a son. Maxine spent quality time with her grandchildren taking them on vacations in the summer. Maxine was a positive role model and a supportive friend to her grandchildren. Her commitment to family has been passed to many generations and is exhibited in her great-grandchildren. In 1943, Maxine began a Christmas Eve dinner that included a visit from Santa. Many generations of family members continue to make Christmas Eve at "Grandma Maxine's" part of their Christmas tradition. She was employed by Westinghouse from 1942 to her retirement in 1975. While employed at Westinghouse, Maxine organized the "20 Year Veterans Association." Maxine has been an active member of the Methodist Church her entire life and is currently a member of Faith United Methodist Church. Maxine joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Fairmont Auxiliary 2373 in 1963. Maxine's contributions and dedication to the Eagles continued until her death. Over the years she has been elected to multiple chairs at the local, regional, state and district levels. She has been honored many times by the Eagles and the community for her countless contributions. One of her long-term projects has been the continued support she has given Sugar Creek Children's' Center, Inc. in Philippi. Maxine launched the Retired Eagles Activity Club (REAC) in 1972 and arranged bus trips beginning in 1968. She also was awarded the honor of Auxiliary Mother's and Mrs. Eagle, three District Mother, State Grandmother two terms and was a member of the State Past President's Club. Maxine has been awarded two prestigious National Eagles awards. These are the Alta Browning Smith Award (1999) and the Grand Auxiliary Hall of Fame Award (2007).She was also a member of VFW 7048 and the Edgemont Homemakers. In addition to her son, Maxine is survived by her grandchildren Robin Lynn Edwards and her husband David, Lonnie Kevin Crane and Cheryl Ann Crane and her husband Dave Murray; great grandchildren Mark Hunley, Rachelle Westbrook, Amber Deziel, Melissa Lowery, Brian Edwards and Justin Edwards; great-great-grandchildren Jocelyn, Ashleigh and Tyler Lowery; also several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers Manley, Paul and Harry Crane and two sisters Molly Geraldine Wright and Janice Marie and Glen Ford. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Also her daughter-in-law Linda Bryan Crane. Mrs. Everly's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Marion County Meals on Wheels. Friends may call at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel), 320 Madison St., Fairmont Thursday from 2-8 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Clyde Beard officiating. Interment will follow at the Martin Cemetery.
