Virginia Jean was the second of two daughters born to Joseph Kidd Whitehead and Virginia Hazel Gross. Her sister Ann Marie lived only days. Joseph and Virginia Hazel divorced, and both remarried. Joseph had two other daughters, JoAnn and Gayle. Virginia Hazel married Frederick Gorman Guith and he adopted Virginia Jean in 1948. Fred retired from the U. S. Navy, so Virginia was very pro-U. S. Navy, a sentiment which she passed on to her children, three of who enlisted in the Navy.

Virginia lived in Duluth, MN; Long Island, NY; Pacific Palisades, CA; Coronado, CA; and Nogales, AZ; during her childhood. At an early age she showed great talent for music and studied piano. While in Coronado she was active in band at school. She graduated from Nogales High School in Nogales, AZ, in 1950. While attending Arizona State University in Flagstaff, AZ, she met William Augustus Sanchez, Jr. The couple wed in Nogales in 1952. They had two children together, Michael James (1953) and Peggy Ann (1955). Virginia's third child was Sally Marie (1956). Virginia divorced and remarried to Ken Urwin and the couple had a son Eugene Dane "Sam" (1957). They divorced and Virginia later married Leonard Talvitie, who adopted all four children. They divorced and Virginia later married Lloyd James Fort in South Dakota in 1960. Lloyd also adopted all four children. They divorced in 1976 in Minnesota. Virginia moved to the San Francisco Bay area where she met and married Wayne Hadley Lee in February 1981. The couple lived in Pacifica, CA, for some years before they retired to Virginia's native Duluth, MN, where they lived until her passing. She is buried with three generations of her ancestors in the Gross family plot.

Virginia could work a Rubic's Cube to completion in two minutes. She could finish an advanced crossword puzzle in only minutes as well. She could sit down at a piano and play Tchaikovsky from memory. She made the best potatoe salad in the world. She loved her husband Wayne and her children and her pet cats. She was a friend for life with those who were blessed to know her. Her family called her "Snooney" as a child; she was known to friends as "Ginger." She believed in God and in His Son and in the miracle of rebirth through Christ.
