The daughter of the late Margaret and James Burns, she was born Dorothy Marie Burns in Utica. She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan sisters of Allegany at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on August 15, 1949 and professed her final vows on August 16, 1956.
Sister Karen received a bachelor's and master's degee in educaton from St. Bonaventure University. She taught in schools in New Jersey, New York, Florida and Bolivia from 1950-1970. She is survived by a brother William Burns.
