OBIT. WILLIAM H. KNAPP Summit County Beacon Sept. 18, 1889 p.7 (newspapers.com) – William H. Knapp died Sept. 11 was born in Danbury, CT. Feb. 16, 1801, came to Cleveland, 1826, in May 1828 married Deborah D. Wightman, oldest daughter of Col. John Wightman, one of Cleveland's pioneers. He was engineer of the Ohio canal when that was being built, was associated with Capt. Richard Howe, formerly of this city. He afterwards was elected to the office of County Surveyor of Cuyahoga County for three different terms, and his desire for the educating and lifting up of the masses was so great that at one time he opened a private school in his own house making no specified charges, letting each one give as they could afford. This school was conducted in Independence, Cuyahoga Co., and several men and women of families attended, it being the best opportunity of their lives.
ANOTHER OBIT. - Cleveland Plain Dealer (Fri.) Sept. 13, 1889 p. 2- - Died Wed. (Sept. 11), in Coventry Twp., Summit Co., at home of his daughter Mrs. Levi Allen. Died at 88 years of age.

He was a civil engineer who worked on the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal near Coshocton, Ohio, before settling in Independence in 1833. He held numerous public offices, including those of township clerk assessor, and postmaster.
