Karel Cogge became well known for his important role at the beginning of World War I. Karel Cogge was controler of the northern waterways in Veurne (West Flanders, Belgium. After the German invasion of Belgium in 1914 he advisded the leadership of the Belgian Army to flood the region of the river Yser, thus blocking the advance of the German Army and allowing the Belgian Army to withdraw behind the Nieuwpoort - Diksmuide railway line and that for the rest of World War I. The actual opening of the locks in Nieuwpoort took place during the 2 consecutive nights of 26 & 27 october 1914. Later Karel Cogge was honoured by the Belgian King Albert I for his important role during World War I in the region of Flanders Fields
