She was born May 11, 1935 in Clayton, Illinois the daughter of Edwin and Alma Clarkson Ennen. She married Robert L. "Bob" Phillips on June 24, 1956 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Quincy, Illinois and he preceded her in death on June 6, 2004.
Mrs. Phillips was a homemaker. She attended Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Clayton, Illinois and graduated from Clayton High School.
Edith was a devoted member of the First Lutheran Church of Mt. Sterling where she shared her love of music as church organist for 40 years and she also served as Sunday School Superintendent. She always enjoyed photography and was also known as an excellent cook who loved to prepare birthday dinners for her family especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include 5 children Sharon Cleaves and her husband John of Quincy, Illinois, Terry Phillips and his wife Susan of Shelbyville, Indiana, Darryl Phillips of Camden, Illinois, Kathy Boyd and her husband Scott of Mt. Sterling and Steven Phillips of Mt. Sterling. 1 sister Ethel Kurfman of Chambersburg, Illinois. 5 grandchildren Joseph Cleaves and his wife Jane, Lacey Rardon and her husband J.R., Shane Cleaves, Caitlin Phillips and Haley Boyd. 1 step grandson Ryan Boyd and 1 great grandson Jacob Rardon also survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 10, 2008 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Joseph Eckman officiating.
Burial was in the South Side Cemetery in Clayton, Illinois.
Visitation was from 5:00 until 7:00 on Sunday at the funeral home.
