Martin Louis Farkus, 85, of 300 E Winters Ave., West Hazieton, PA, died Wednesday afternoon at Hazleton General Hospital.
He was born in Hazleton, the son of the late John and Helen (Kapes) Farkus.
He was a member of St. Joseph R.C. Church -and the Holy Name Society.
A veteran of World War II, he was a staff sergeant, serving as a squad leader in the 311th Timberwolf Regiment, 78th Lightning Division "K" Co, and saw combat in the European Theatre of Operations. His regiment was involved in a pivotal moment of the war, being the first Americans to cross the Rhine at Remagen, Germany, in March of 1945. He received the European African Middle East Campaign medal, the Bronze Star, Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
In the late 1950s, he started a photography business, Farkus Portrait Studio, and until his retirement in 1982, worked as a professional photographer.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Kohuth; sisters, Elizabeth Gennaro, Julia Surman and Theresa Flaim; and a brother, Elmer.
He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Baranko, and their son, Martin John; his son by his first wife, Daryl; three grandchildren, Tara, Lauren and Whitney; and several nieces and nephews.
