Lawrence County Coroner Sidney Fortenberry said Clifton Warren Wayne Tynes, 15, was killed when his four-wheeler collided with a pickup truck. He said the accident occurred at the intersection of Light Plant Road and Highway 27 South on Sunday. Sheriff Joel Thames said it appeared Tynes had pulled out in front of the truck. He was taken to Lawrence County Hospital and then airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. "He underwent surgery there and never recovered from it," Fortenberry said. Fortenberry said Tynes was pronounced dead at UMC at 1:32 p.m. Monday.
Thames said four-wheelers are not supposed to be driven on the roads in Lawrence County, in accordance with state laws. "It's a statewide law that four-wheelers are not considered approved road machines," he said, adding that he hoped that the tragedy would remind other young people to keep their ATVs off the roads. Officials said Tynes' family is meeting with Wilson's Funeral Home Wednesday morning to make arrangements for his funeral.
