John Keerl was born in Charles Town, the son of Dr. William and Ellen Keerl. Before the war John was a clerk. He enlisted on April 18, 1861 in Charles Town in Co. G Botts Greys, 2nd Va Infantry, Stonewall Brigade. John was wounded at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. Because of his wound he missed the Gettysburg campaign. He returned from sick furlough on July 23, 1863. John was promoted to Sergeant on September 1, 1863. Sergeant Keerl was killed at the battle of Monacacy on July 9, 1864.
