HOWARD FORTIN 1912 - 2008 "Chet" Fortin was born to Frederick and Selma Fortin in Edgeley, North Dakota, quietly passed away September 18, 2008, in Valencia, California. Chet will be remembered for his love of his family, his passion for golf and outdoor recreation, and as a business and civic leader in the early days of the Santa Clarita Valley. He graduated in 1934 as a student athlete from North Dakota State Teachers College and taught high school classes and coached sports. In 1936, he married his college sweetheart Lois Aileen Dunsdon. He was recruited by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation as a process engineer for Lockheed's plastics department in Burbank and moved his family to the San Fernando Valley in 1940. In 1955, he founded Fortin Plastics relocating it in 1961 to a Newhall Land & Farming development at Castaic Junction, Saugus, California, and eventually to the Valencia Industrial Park in 1971 and Fortin Laminating to San Fernando before retiring in 1975 and moving to Oceanside continuing his passion for golf at El Camino Country Club in north San Diego County. Where ever he went so went his golf clubs and snow skis. He was a founder of the West Valley YMCA coaching youth sports. He spent many days with his friend PGA professional Jimmy Thompson at the Valencia Golf Course where for ma ny years was the Men's Club President and won several Men's Club tournaments. He was active in Republican politics and was an original member of the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Board of Trustees. He is survived after being predeceased by his wife, Lois (1991) and daughter, Sheryl (1958), by his loving sons, Terry and Kent; grandchildren, David Fortin, Carrie Fortin Troy, Kathy Fortin Shaffer, Valerie Fortin, Stacy Fortin Santos, Shelly Renee Fortin, Scott Fortin, Tamara Hutten and Gary Howard, their re spective spouses; 12 great grandchildren and 17 nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be sent to the Chester H. Fortin Memorial Fund at Henry Mayo Hospital (661-253-8000) in Valencia, California.
