Thomas R. Hirst, died at his home in Christiana Saturday morning of a broken hip sustained about three weeks ago. Mr. Hirst was in his 89 year and was born in Leeds, England. He came to this country at the age of 18. In 1857 he came to Paradise where he worked until he enlisted in Co. G., 21st Pennsylvania Calvary and served eight months after which he re-enlisted for three years. In 1864 he was honorable discharged for his shoulder was dislocated in an engagement when his horse was shot under him. When Mr. Hirst returned from the front he resumed his trade as blacksmith with Samuel Cox, Lancaster's leading carriage builder and who had a contract to build 100 wagons for the government. When the contract was completed Mr. Hirst located at Christiana where he lived more than 50 years. He retired from the business in 1876. He was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years. The only local office he ever held was road supervisor of the borough. He was a member of the Christiana Masonic Lodge, for many years and took a very active part in its meetings. He became a member of the Odd Fellows in England. He had the honor of being the only Charter member of John R. Ross Post, No. 358 G. A. R. at Christiana and one of the last three of that organization. He was also at one time president of the Christiana Fire Company and the Christiana Gravity Water Co. He was appointed postmaster of Christiana in 1910 by President Taft. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sara A. Hirst, and four children, C. Frank Hirst, T. Herbert Hirst, of Christiana, Harry E., of Toledo, Ohio, and Mrs. Zelva, M. Sheaffer, of Highspire.
