Roberta Ann Scott, 89, of Big Rock, Ill., passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich.
She was born March 31, 1919, in Aurora, the daughter of John and Anna (Wilkening) James. Roberta was united in marriage on Dec. 26, 1948, to Byron Hoyt Scott Sr.; they spent the next 58 happy years together until his passing Dec. 23, 2006.
She was a longtime member of English Congregational United Church of Christ in Big Rock, a former church treasurer and was also a member of its "Willing Workers." Roberta and Byron were members of the "Hit and Miss Supper Club." Mrs. Scott worked in the cafeterias of both the Big Rock Grade School and the Hinckley-Big Rock schools. She was also a bus driver for the Big Rock School District and was its second female bus driver. Roberta was a hard-working farm wife and spent many hours helping Byron in the fields and also driving the tractor. She and her husband always looked forward to spending their winters in Fort Myers, Fla., after they retired from farming. Roberta was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt who will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
She is survived by her children, Ronda (Greg) Beels and Byron H. (Tree) Scott Jr., both of Big Rock; her grandchildren, Beth (David) Kersten of Salisbury, S.C., Lynn Sommers of Sugar Grove, Lorri (Mike) Dugan of Sugar Grove, Robyn (Leigh) Castle of Plainfield, Katie Scott of Savannah, Ga., and Michelle, Jenifer, Lindsey and Austin of Big Rock; her great-grandchildren, Kristen (James) Taylor of Japan, Kaitlin Petschke of Hinckley, Jamie and April Woodrick of Yorkville, Lauren Woodrick of Batavia, Ben and Ethan Sommers of Sugar Grove and Michelle and Mallory Dugan of Sugar Grove; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna James; her first husband, Rodney F. Wiggin; her second husband, Byron Hoyt Scott Sr.; her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Robert Woodrick; her grandson, Brad Woodrick; her brother, Wylie James; and her sisters, Vivian Williams and Evelyn Boyce.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Nash-Nelson Memorial Chapel, 141 N. Maple St. in Hinckley, with the Rev. Dr. Byron G. Henn officiating. Interment will follow at West Big Rock Cemetery in Big Rock.
Friends may visit from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Nash-Nelson Memorial Chapel in Hinckley.
