At one time, in Hungary, a surname ending in "y" implied nobility. Istvan is said to be a noble who had a coat-of-arms, but did not receive an estate from the king.
Sometime between Istvan and his past generations, the surname was changed by dropping the "y" and adding "i" to the family name, i.e. Galgoczy became Galgoczi. This name-changing was a practice done by noble families to escape retribution from governmental reprisals.
In 1877. Istvan married Rozalia Horvath (from Koronco, Hungary). By this marriage he had 13 children, two of whom came to the United States, Balint (who changed his given name to "Walter") Galgoczi and Aladar (aka Andrew) Galgoczi. Three of the children died in their childhood.
In the family photo (courtesy of the Galgoczi families in the US), Andrew is the young man on the far left in the top row, while "Walter" is standing between his parents (Rozalia and Istvan Galgoczi) in the bottom row. The picture was taken in Koronco, Gyor County, Hungary.
Another photo is of the Holy Trinity Church in Csanakhegy (a 1915 postcard), where Istvan was baptized; it's very difficult to find a picture of Csanakhegy. Csanakhegy was later known as Menfocsanak by the 1934 merging of three villages, Menfo, Csanakfalu and Csanakhegy (map). Later in 1970, Menfocsanak merged with Gyirmot, Gyor and Gyorszentivan and became known as Gyor.
Below, twelve children are accounted for, but thirteen were verified by Mrs. Karoly Galgoczi in Hungary. The last child may have been a daughter, Rose. Research is pending.
