John Lord Butler Jr., 92, of Stoddartsville, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at his home.
He was born in Philadelphia, on June 28, 1918, a son of the late Marion Sharpless Butler and John Lord Butler. After graduating from the Hill School in Pottstown, he attended Yale, where he participated on the fencing team and graduated in 1940 with a degree in geology. After graduation, he made a career in the U.S. Navy, and served during World War II and the Korean War. He served in the Battles of Okinawa and Guadalcanal, among others. He retired with the rank of Commander in 1962. Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he taught biology at the Hill School in Pottstown. While there, he enjoyed being the advisor for the gun club. Many of his students remained in contact with him.
He was an enthusiastic preservationist of the historic and natural areas of Stoddartsville. Much of his time was dedicated to securing Stoddartsville's place on the National Register. He then went on to become an honorary member for life of the Nature Conservancy. He also supported the Wildlands Conservancy. He was a member of the Wyoming Valley Historical Society and served as secretary of the Butler Society. He was a founding member of the Stoddartsville Preservation Society.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Underhill Butler; his second wife, Helene Bosworth Butler; and by a sister, Gertrude Butler Blackwood. He is survived by a daughter, Susan Relgeluth, Belgium; two sons, James L. Butler and his wife, Michaelene, Tulsa, Okla., and Philip S. Butler, Henderson, Nev.; a sister, Mary-Elizabeth Gordon, Tobyhanna Township; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by Jen, his loving and devoted dog. His niece, the Rev. Elisabeth Stafford, will perform a graveside service for his family and close friends at 11 a.m. Monday in Beaumont [Stoddartsville] Cemetery, Stoddartsville.
The Navy will be represented, and the honor guard will provide a 21-gun salute. Memorial donations in his honor can be made to the Stoddartsville Preservation Society, HC 1, Box 1116, Blakeslee, PA 18610 or to the Nature Conservancy, Box 55, Long Pond, PA 18334. The family wishes to thank all neighbors, friends who eased his burdens and added joy to his life.
