WILMINGTON — The Rev. Thurman Allred, of Wilmington, N.C., went to be with his Lord on Friday, October 3, 2008.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, at the Winter Park Baptist Church in Wilmington, N.C.

A long time pastor, inspirational speaker, author and humorist, Rev. Allred was well known across North and South Carolina and Tennessee. During his 50 years of active ministry, Rev. Allred served as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Blacksburg, S.C., The Cypress Chapel Baptist Church in Spring Hope, N.C., First Baptist Church in New London, N.C. and the Rocky Hock Baptist Church in Edenton, N.C. During these years, he also served as Superintendent of Missions of the Cabarrus Baptist Association and was a consultant with the Church Administration Department and the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

Prior to entering the Gospel ministry in 1950, Rev. Allred served in the U.S. Army in World War II and later was trucking manager with Burlington Mills in Burlington, N.C. He graduated from Gardner Webb College, Wake Forest College and Southeastern Seminary.

Rev. Allred was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Coble Allred and a son, James Randall Allred.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara King of Wilmington, N.C. and Lynn Robinson of Rutherfordton, N.C.; and a son, David W. Allred of Fancy Gap, Virginia. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, you may honor his memory by making a donation to Winter Park Baptist Church or to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, N.C.
