MARTHA'S OBITUARY #1 (Paulding County Library; Courtesy of Barb R., another cousin; corrections are in brackets):

Martha J. Schuler, the first born to Reading and Sophia (Trine) Schuler, was born in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio on August 7, 1845. She was united in marriage March 26, 1867 with Thomas J. May, who was born March 12, 1842. He was a member of Co. C. 68th O.V.I. in the war of the rebellion. He died near Oakwood Feb. 25, 1886. To this union was born one son.

The genealogy of this family has been carefully and laboriously traced back to the middle of the 18th century to Berks County, Pennsylvania, by Amandus B. Schuyler. Mrs. May is survived by one sister, Mrs. Laura Grove, one half sister Mrs. [Emmaline] Harvey, and three half brothers Reading, David and Asa [Adam Asa] Schuler. One brother William and one half sister Effie are deceased. [Martha was also predeceased by two other full-blooded siblings mentioned in her father's obituary from his first marriage (names unknown) and two younger half-sisters Sarah and Esther who died young.]

Eighty years ago last fall, her father's family arrived in Brown Township from Butler County, Ohio. The county at that time was practically a solid wilderness with here and there a small farm hewed out of the woods. Her mother died shortly after the family moved to Paulding County and upon this daughter involved the cares largely of the Reading Schuler family who were left desolate in the pioneer cabin on the banks of the Auglaize River.

The son, Emory [Emery] W. May was born Sept. 22, 1873 and died Nov. 30, 1902. Miranda Schuyler [Marinda (nee Schuler) Belau], daughter of William Schuler made her home with Mrs. May for a number of years. She is now deceased.

She exemplified the virtiues of a good Christian life. She was an excellent neighbor. Her quiet and gentle life unperturbed by the hurry and restless activity of our modern days left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She knew the secret of how to live long and well. She died at her home near Oakwood, March 19, aged 86 years, 7 months and 12 days.

MARTHA'S OBITUARY #2 (Paulding County Library; Courtesy of Barb R., another cousin; corrections are in brackets):

DEATH TAKES PIONEER FROM THIS COMMUNITY

In the death of Mrs. Martha May, which occurred at her home 3 1/2 miles north of Oakwood, early last Saturday morning, another pioneer of the early days of Brown township passes to the Great Beyond.

Mrs. May was in her 86th year at the time of her death. She was a daughter of Reading and Sophia (Trine) Shuler [Schuler], who came to this county from Butler county, Ohio, eighty years ago last fall, settling on a farm on the right bank of the Auglaize River, two or three miles below Charloe.

Mrs. May was born in [Hamilton,] Butler county, Ohio, Aug. 7th, 1845, and came to this county with her parents 80 years ago. She was married to Thomas J. May, who died in February, 1886.

Mrs. Laura Groves [Grove] is the only full sister of Mrs. May still living. Emery W. May, the only child, died Nov. 30, 1902.

Funeral services were held at Centenary Church Monday afternoon, Rev. R.A. Bates officiating, and burial was made in the Sherman cemetery.
