Richard grew up in Channelview, Texas and graduated from Channelview High School. He loved the Rockies and moved there after graduating.
His grandfather, Mr. Carroll Schochler, had been an educator and was, at one time, the Superintendent of the Channelview Independent School District.
Richard's mother, Betty Stanley, passed away a few years after Richard. She was also an educator.
