Sept. 24, 1920 - May 16, 2004
On Sunday, May 16th, 2004, at 5:20 p.m., Doc was told to "get your hat" and off he went for a new adventure.
Services have been set for Daniel M. Soda, 83, a 55 year Bedford Township resident, a retired chiropractor, a former member of the Bedford Township Board and Monroe County Commissioner who died Sunday at home surrounded by his family.
A Mass of Resurrection will take place on Thursday, May 20, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Temperance.
Born September 24, 1920, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he was the son of the late William and Mary Josephine Soda. He married Janet E. Malcheff on April 12, 1947.
After graduating from National Chiropractic College in Chicago, he along with his wife, owned and operated the Soda Chiropractic Clinic for 41 years. He retired in 1991.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. His tour duty based him primarily in the Philippines. He manned a machine gun on a hell-diver dive bomber. He also saw duty in China and was on a bombing mission to Mindanao when the war ended.
He was a charter member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church; Michigan Chiropractic Association; Past Commander of the Erie VFW Post 3925; American Legion Sherman Osborn; Monroe Elks (41 years); Charter member and past Commissioner of 3-B Bedford Boys Baseball Organization.
Doc was very active in local township government for many years. He served on the Bedford Township Board as Trustee for 8 years; elected to Monroe County Commissioner and served from 1968 through 1974 representing Bedford Township; appointed to the Bedford Library Advisory Board.
In 1956, he joined the Bedford Township Volunteer Fire Department where he was an active member for 48 years. As a tribute to his many years of service to Bedford Township the Bedford Township Board recently resolved that April 21, 2004, would be "Dr. Daniel M. Soda Day." In 1975 he earned the Michigan Minute Man Award.
He operated Soda Park where area youth spent many years playing Little League Baseball. The park also hosted many events through the years such as Fireman's Field Days, carnivals, and Township fireworks displays. He was often seen on his old John Deere tractor enjoying the property. He was an avid hunter and loved going to the north woods with his "Monroe Group".
Surviving in addition to his loving wife are one daughter, Mary Kay (Thom) Frushour and one son, Daniel W. (Susan); one sister, Beatrice (Bunny) Suchenski; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Zielinski, Jill Soda and Michael Soda; two step grandchildren, Amy Kelly and Kevin Frushour and six great-grandchildren.
He kept the music playing, the hugs and laughs coming and the wine flowing. He loved his family and friends and left a trail of "Cookies" and "Tomatoes" everywhere he went.
You made our day, Doc.
Bye, Bye, Bye.
Beautiful.
Dan thank you for your love
and memories of over 57 years.
'Til we meet again. Jan.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Temperance.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Farnham Funeral Home, 1125 W. Temperance Rd., Temperance, MI.
