James was born in Nashua on July 30, 1943 a son of the late Frank & Clara (Defenna) McAlister. He was the husband of Pauline (Ducharme) McAlister of Nashua.
A lifelong resident of Nashua, he was educated in local schools. Mr. McAlister obtained his GED in 1961 from the United States Armed Forces Institute in Madison, WI. During the Vietnam War, he served from 1960 to 1964 on the USS Haleakala AE-25 and the USS Mount Ktmai AE-16 stationed in Port Chicago, CA, Hawaii and Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1966. James was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #0200 in Concord and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #14000 in Concord. He was an avid NASCAR fan (#3 and #48) and he loved fishing. James was a lifetime member of the North American Fishing Club, Bass Anglers Sportsman Society and Wildlife Forever. He was one of the founding fathers in 1980 of the New Hampshire Scenic Riders. Prior to his illness, James had been employed by the City of Nashua Parks & Recreation Dept. for over 15 years.
Besides his wife of 47 years, James is survived by three sons, James E. McAlister Jr. and his wife Lisa of Salem, Edward McAlister and his wife Lisa of Nashua and Gary McAlister and his wife Luanne of Weare; one daughter, Laura Korona and her husband Kevin of Londonderry; seven grandchildren, Troy McAlister, Samantha McAlister, Kristin Korona, Todd McAlister, Kacy McAlister, Kailyn Korona and Rebecca McAlister; one sister, Victoria Irwin of Vermont; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
SERVICES: Visiting hours will be Friday, September 26, 2008 from 4 to 8 PM in the Anctil-Rochette & Son Funeral Home, 21 Kinsley St., Nashua. Burial will take place in the Lithuanian Co-Op Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.
