The son of Samuel C. and Margaret Saunders Knott was a boatman on the Chesapeake and Ohio canal. He hauled stones from his father's quarry. He took them from Spring Mill and Knott's Quarry to Georgetown. He married Mary Virginia Reinhart in 1860. He joined the 12th Virginia Cavalry and was appointed Captain of Company D. Late in 1862 he was wounded in the shoulder. He was promoted to Major on 27 May 1863. Autumn of 1863, he was signing the roll as commander of the regiment through the summer of '64. In September Debilatis caused him to be admitted to General Hospital Number Nine in Richmond. He was killed, shot in head, at the Battle of High Bridge.
