CONCORD -- Richard Bates Couser, 67, died Sept. 23, 2008, at home after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Lebanon, where he attended the public schools. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1959, from Yale University in 1963, and received an LL.B. from Stanford Law School in 1966.

He practiced law at Orr & Reno PA in Concord before moving to D'Amante, Couser, Steiner and Pellerin.

He was involved in the Boy Scouts, rising to Eagle Scout and serving as counselor, nature director, and program director at Camp Carpenter in Manchester.

Later he helped organize a Concord branch of the A Better Chance (ABC) program, which brought students from failing inner-city schools to improve their opportunities for success. Richard also had a long-standing relationship with the Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, including a term as the support-raising group's president. He served as president of Rolfe and Rumford Home, as a board member for Energy North, a board member for Mount Zion Christian School, and a member of the Interfaith Council.

He was baptized by his brother-in-law, the Rev. James Frase, at First Congregational Church of Barrington, where he served as a deacon and occasional substitute preacher.

IN HIS LIFE: Family members include his wife of 42 years, Linda (Gelatt) Couser; his brother, Dr. William Couser of Seattle, Wash.; his daughter, Alison (Couser) Rhodes and her husband, Steven Rhodes; his son, Jonathan Couser and his wife, Yvette (Burnham); and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Winifred (Ham) Couser of Lebanon, and his sister, Sarah (Couser) Johnson, also of Lebanon.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., Concord. After a private graveside ceremony, a memorial service will be held at Centerpoint Church, 20 North State St., Concord, Tuesday at 2 p.m. A reception will follow in the church commons.

Memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, HB 7920, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon 03756.
