Cora Virilla Brainard b. Mar. 24, 1860 DeKalb, St. Lawrence County, New York. d. June 16, 1900 Stacyville, IA. Cora the first of five children born to James Brainard and Violet Catherine Nicol. Her family was living in Hammond, DeKalb Township, St. Lawrence County, NY at the time.

In 1864, when Cora V. Brainard was 4 years old, her parents moved by covered wagon to Mitchell County, Union Township, section 22 in Iowa to an 80 acre farm. She became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Stacyville, Iowa as did her family.

In Stacyville, Iowa March 24, 1886 she married Benjamin Daniel NICHOLAS, son of Henry Nicholas and Mary Beavan all originally from Milford Haven, Penbrokshire, Wales. Rev. Adams Holms officiated and Henry David Ross Brainard, her brother, and Rachal S. Nicholas, her sister in law, were witnesses, and signed the wedding certificate.

Cora was a school teacher before her marriage. She died an untimely death at age 40 from tuberculosis on June 16, 1900. Cora was survived by her husband, Ben and their 4 young children:

Occupation: Homemaker on farm

2. Harold⁹ James " Harry" Nicholas (63 yrs.) b. Sept. 12, 1888 Lake Park, IA d. May 18, 1952 in his private plane (crash) Libertyville, IL Harry married Bertha Edna Mason, who lived to be 100 yrs old. (1 child: Harold Benjamin Nicholas )

3. Grace⁹ Edna Nicholas (88 yrs) (my paternal grandmother)
b. Sept. 5, 1890 Lake Park, IA above her father's Blacksmith shop. d. Sept. 1, 1978 buried Brea, CA m. Charles Henry Rowe (3 Children: Rev. Ralph Edward, Dorothea Winifred, Charles Percy Rowe) occupation: Homemaker

4. John⁹ Nicholas (68 yrs) b. Aug. 7, 1894 Lake Park, Dickenson County, Iowa d. Mar. 28, 1962 Marvin, SD m. Fern Muth then she died. m. Elsie Anderson (2 children : Darlene Nicholas Keppler. and Doris Ann Nicholas Zerfas. Occupation: Railroad Depot Agent . Deeply close to God.

She is also survived by her brother Henry David Ross Brainard (1863-1931) and preceded in death by her father James Brainard (1828-1892) and 3 siblings who died in infancy: Anna Eliza Brainard, Mabel Edith Brainard and James Alva Brainard.

Cora is buried in the Stacyville Cemetery next to her husband, Benjamin Daniel Nicholas, a life long member of the David, IA Baptist Church and historical (defunct) town of David, Iowa.
