BENJAMIN³ DANIEL NICHOLAS (Henry², John¹)was born Ap. 25, 1868 Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales, the third child of six children ( Mary Ann, John Franklin, Benjamin Daniel, James Henry, Rachel Sarah, Elizabeth Phylliss "Bessie") born to Henry Nicholas and Mary Ann Bevan. He came with his parents and family in 1869 from Wales when he was 10 yrs. old.
At first the family settled in Lake County, Illinois near his father's brother, John Nicholas and family where his youngest sibling, Elizabeth "Bessie" Nicholas was born Nov. 7, 1870 .

In 1878 the family moved to Mitchell County, Iowa in a covered wagon. This (Mitchell County, IA) is where he grew up. It was on March 8, 1879 that Ben's grandmother, Mary Ann Price Bevan died at David, Mitchell, Iowa.

March 24,1886 in Stacyville, Mitchell Co., Iowa. Benjamin married CORA VIRILLA BRAINARD, daughter of James Brainard and Violet Catherine Nicol who lived just outside David, Iowa. Benjamin and Cora moved to Lake Park, Dickenson Co., Iowa where Benjamin and his younger brother, James Henry Nicholas, started the first Blacksmith Shop. Benjamin and Cora's children were born in the loft above the blacksmith shop.

After a few years they moved from Lake Park, Iowa via covered wagon to David, Mitchell Co. Iowa where Benjamin continued with a blacksmith and farm implement business along with George Robbins.
Benjamin's wife, Cora, a former school teacher, died in at age 39 from tuberculosis on June 16, 1900 and Benjamin became a widower at the age of 37 with 4 young children.

1. Violet ⁴ Mary Nicholas (37 yrs) b. Apr. 4, 1887 Lake Park, IA d. Apr. 24, 1924

2. Harry ⁴ James Nicholas (63 yrs.) b. Sept. 12, 1888 Lake Park, IA d. May 18, 1952 in his private plane (crash) near Wheaton, IL.

3. Grace ⁴ Edna Nicholas (88 yrs) b. Sept. 5, 1890 Lake Park, IA d. Sept. 1, 1978 buried Brea, CA m. Charles Henry Rowe (my grandmother) Three children: Ralph E. Rowe, Dorotha Rowe and Charles Rowe.

4. John ⁴ Benjamin Nicholas (68 yrs) b. Aug. 7, 1894 Excelsor Township, Dickenson County, Iowa d. Mar. 28, 1962 Marvin, SD

Benjamin co-owned the Ben Nicholas and Bert Robbins Farm Machinery Store in what is now a ghost-town (David, Iowa) and lived there on Nicol Road. He joined the David Free Baptist Church and so did his daughter, Grace Nicholas Rowe.

Two years after Cora died, Ben remarried on Sept. 25, 1902 to widow, Alpharetta Harmer Sweet Robbins, whose husband (George Robbins) was shot 2 years earlier trying to heroically defend the owner of the hotel in David, IA and his family being held hostage in the only murder in historical David, Iowa. Alpharetta was pregnant at the time with her sixth son by George Robbins. Listed are their sons:

3. Roy Robbins
4. Bert Edward Robbins
5. La Verne Robbins
6. Maurice Lee Robbins

Just months before Ben died, he and Alpharetta moved to Kirksville, MO to be near Maurice L. Robbins, her youngest son. Ben died of kidney failure (acute nephritis) a short time later after he accidentally swallowed poison, mistaking it for medicine. He died on Dec. 26, 1920 in Kirksville, MO. His body was sent back to Stacyville, Iowa for burial.

He was survived by his wife, Alpharetta and his 4 children and 6 stepsons, Louis Robbins of New Haven, Iowa, George Robbins of Rambrandt, IA, Ray Robbins of Osage, IA, Bertrum Robbins of Ft. Dodge, LaVern of Des Moines and Maurice Robbins of Kirksville, MO. Also 2 brothers, John F. Nicholas of McIntire, IA and James H. Nicholas of Lake Park, IA and 3 sisters, Mary A. Nicholas Millard of Osage, Rachel Nicholas Graves and Elizabeth P. Nicholas Hocum of David, IA, 12 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews besides a lots of friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 31, at 10:30 a.m. in the church at David by pastor, Rev. Gibson and Methodist pastor, Rev. Cannon of Stacyville, IA. His remains were laid to rest alongside Cora Virilla Brainard Nicholas at the Stacyville Cemetery, Stacyville,Iowa. His six stepsons were pallbearers.

The gravestone picture shows 5 of Ben's great grandchildren: Grace⁶ , Evelyn⁶ , Florence⁶ , James⁶ and David⁶ Rowe.
