Manette earned a bachelor's degree in 1939 from Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, where she was a member and former president of Alpha Epsilon Alpha Sorority and charter member of the philanthropic organization P.E.O. She donated a valuable collection of the Swett Family's books, papers, letters and history of Natchitoches Parish to the Watson Library at N.S.U.
In 1948 Manette received a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Colorado (Greeley). That same year she moved to Gainesville, Florida, to teach kindergarten at P.K. Yonge Laboratory School at the University of Florida. Manette retired in 1975 after a long and distinguished career spanning 27 years. She then became a world traveler for 15 years.
Manette died Tues., Dec. 30, 2008, at Wood Manor Nursing Home in Claremore, OK, at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents and twin brother, Benjamin Scriven Swett IV. She will be remembered by generations of students for her dignity of character and devotion to children.
A memorial service and internment will be held later this month at the American Cemetery in Natchitoches. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the "University of Florida Foundation - P.K. Yonge Fund #681," P.O. Box 14425, Gainesville, Florida, 32604.
